1964 Amphicar Maiden voyage
Here's another great restoration by me, Tom Maruska. This is the maiden voyage of my freshly restored 1964 Amphicar. This video was produced by my friend and renowned Hollywood editor Kris Trexler. Kris worked in the film industry many years and edited many sitcoms such as All in the Family, Last Man Standing, Ellen and Tool Time to name a few. He flew to my home in Duluth Minnesota specifically for a ride in my Amphicar and I was very fortunate to have him produce this video. It was September 26, 2023. The Portions of the video with the Amphicar alone in the water were taken by my friend Jim Finn who was on a pontoon boat nearby, and Kris incorporated them into the video. Many thanks to ...

When I was only like 4 years old, we had a 57. Not with the glass roof though. I didn’t know that existed. But I remember ours. Red with white trim and fender skirts.

1954 Mercury XM-800 concept car Tom Maruska restored and auctioned in 2010 The 1954 Mercury XM-800 was a concept car that debuted at the 1954 Detroit Auto Show. It was designed by John Najjar and Elwood Engle in 1952. The XM-800 was based on the Mercury Monterey chassis and had fiberglass body panels. It was pearlescent white with a copper-colored roof. The XM-800 was a full-size two-door hardtop. It was often referred to as a "Dream Machine" because it was built to test new ideas. The XM-800 was designed in the Mercury Pre-Production Studio. It was once owned by Joe Bortz.

About the only thing that needs improving is that the trunk lid opening should be larger. The interior is a work of art. The split bench seats were what eventually used in later model Fords and Mercurys. Mercury had some of the best if not THEE best concept cars. And who was the clueless imp that said Mercury was irrelevant?

“Crazy ‘bout a Mercury”. Even the music is perfect for your video. Literally unique…one of a kind…it really seems a shame Mercury didn’t start building and selling these Turnpike Cruisers. I’m thinking this one wears the two colors extremely well. Born in 1949 and raised in the center of California, I grew up with a soft spot in my heart for Mercurys. This could have been their “Crown Jewel”.

My grandpop worked on the design of this car. He was an Advanced Stylist for Ford Mercury Company back in 55, 56, 57. My grandpops name was Thomas J. Heigh and he worked under Alex Tremulis and George Walker at Ford Mercury. My grandpops job was to design future cars in their Advanced Styling Division. He was also WWll combat veteran in the 69th Infantry Division Engineers Battalion and was a SPEC 5 Engineer and he and the famous pop artist Roy Lichtenstein worked side by side on maps and construction drawings for bridges to move troops through 1944. They helped break the Seigfreid Line and later in 1945 were located in Leipzig, Germany as the 69th occupied Leipzig. He went onto be the design director for several companies in his career. He made it to 94 years old and passed away in 2017.

Nice restoration, but calling fiberglass plastic is quite a stretch, it's glass fiber and epoxy. It is easily replaced with hemp at a much cheaper cost. Kind of like that truck in the Cheech and Chong movie, fiber-weed. they weren't too far off the mark! But Hemp saves tons if energy, it's not manufactured under intense heat, it just grows for you.
